Special session of the National Assembly on occasion of the Day of the Republic of Serbia



The central ceremony of the National Day of the Republic of Serbia was held today at the National Assembly to commemorate the events of the 19th century symbolizing the beginning of modern Serbian state.

'Bound by words and deeds of our forefathers, who while living in extremely difficult circumstances managed to keep our homeland, today we also have to defend Serbia, a beautiful democratic state, founded on the those who laid their lived defending it. May we keep Serbia within its borders, " as President Nikolic stated at a special session of the National Day in the National Assembly.

Congratulating the holiday to all the citizens, Nikolic said that the elected representatives of the citizens are expected to direct their efforts toward a common goal - "the preserving our existence here, in our proud state of Serbia."

"We must not lose hope and we will not just stop trying to preserve our identity and territory. Our heart and soul: Kosovo and Metohija," said Nikolic reminding that on this day, 209 years ago, the First Serbian Uprising broke out, while178 years ago, the Sretenje Constitution was adopted as the first democratic constitution of Serbia.

Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic presented today at a special session of the Assembly of Serbia, the National Day, honors to deserving individuals and organizations.

Medals were awarded posthumously to three members of the Army of Serbia and President Nikolic presented the medals to their families. A gold medal for bravery "Milos Obilic," manifested the courage at workplace and for personal heroism, was awarded to Major Goran Savic and Order of Merit for the defense and security of the second degree, for execution of the duties and tasks in the field of defense and security, were posthumously awarded to Sergeant First Class Slavisa Markovic and Sergeant First Class Nebojsa Milic. Lieutenant Colonel Tomislav Becagović was awarded the gold medal for bravery "Milos Obilic" for courage and act of personal heroism.

Radoslav Zelenovic was awarded the Order of Sretenje of the third degree, for special merits in the field of cinema and Milunka Lazarevic was given the same medal for special merit and achieved remarkable results in the sport of chess.

Nikolic presented the Chairman of the B92 board Veran Matic with the Sretenje medal, of the third degree, for the implementation of socially responsible and humanitarian campaign "Battle for babies". Marija Crnobori, actress, was awarded the Sretenje medal of the third degree, for special merits in the field of theater arts.

National Library of Serbia was awarded the Sretenje medal of the second degree, on the occasion of 180 years of successful work in the collection and preservation of the literary fund of historical and cultural significance for the Republic of Serbia.

Elementary School "Lazar Savatić" from Zemun was awarded the Silver Medal of Merit, which is awarded for special merit in education, on the occasion of 50 years since the school was established.

The First Belgrade Singing company has been awarded the Gold Medal of Merit for special achievement in fostering and promoting Serbian tradition music and art, and on the occasion of 160 years of its existence.

Other institutions to have received awards and acknowledgments are the Institute of Physics, Belgrade, which was awarded the Sretenje medal of the third degree, for outstanding merit on the occasion of fifty years of successful scientific work and research.
