Intensive cooperation with the United Kingdom in the field of defence

State Secretary at the Ministry of Defence Nenad Neric met with Simon Lowe, the Head of the Team for Wider Europe of the Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom.

The State Secretary informed the interlocutor that, after the recent elections, in accordance with the proclaimed military neutrality of Serbia, the foreign policy priorities and defence policy of Serbia will remain unchanged. Neric introduced Lowe to the activities at the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces in the EU accession process, participation in the mechanisms of the Partnership for Peace and the involvement in multinational operations. The State Secretary emphasized that the field of building integrity is of strategic importance for Serbia, because it aims to identify the risks of corruption and unethical behaviour in the institutions of the defence sector. He expressed his gratitude for British support for the project of improving the capacity of TRZ Kragujevac and destroying surplus weapons and military equipment.

Simon Lowe, the Head of the Team for Wider Europe of the Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom, agreed that the intensive defence cooperation in the field of defence is based on the traditionally good and friendly relations between the two countries. UK will seek to speed up the completion of the launched projects and make a step further in new areas of cooperation, which are to be discussed during the meeting at the highest level in the forthcoming period. He recalled that the British Prime Minister David Cameron has recently said in his address that the cooperation in the field of participation in the peacekeeping operations is a priority and that future activities should be focused in that direction.

During the visit to the Ministry of Defence, a meeting with representatives of the Defence Policy Sector was held, in which benefits of the activities carried out on a bilateral basis in the past two years were presented in details.

The delegation of the United Kingdom will be staying in Belgrade on 15 and 16 June, for the purpose of internal audit of the Stability and Security Fund.
