Defence Minister Nebojsa Rodic opened the International Conference on “Protecting the Critical National Infrastructure - Regional Perspective” in the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce.

The audience was addressed also by Dr. Radomir Milasinović, Dean of the Faculty of Security, Dr. Jovan Bazic, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development, Predrag Maric, Assistant Minister of the Interior and Head of the Emergency Planning Sector of the MoI and Tanja Miscevic, Head of the negotiating team of the Republic of Serbia with the European Union.

Minister Rodic said that the critical infrastructure is a part of the system whose maintenance is vital to the functioning of the society.

- Causing damage to the critical infrastructure, destruction or disruption by natural disasters, terrorism, and organized crime and other forms of malicious behaviour, can have cataclysmic negative impact on the security of the state and welfare of the citizens. So one of the main goals of the state should be to reduce vulnerability and increase the strength of the critical national infrastructure, Defence Minister said adding that Europe has recognized this type of potential threats and five years ago it adopted a Directive on the identification and determination of the European Critical Infrastructure and assess the needs to improve their protection.

- I believe that this conference will contribute not only to the exchange of the successful theoretical and practical experiences, but it will necessarily contribute to the improvement of cooperation and the existing system of protection of the critical national infrastructure in the Republic of Serbia, in neighbouring countries and in the European Union, Minister Rodic said.

Tanja Miscevic talked about the strategy for the protection of the critical infrastructure.

- It is found in several negotiating chapters, starting from the questions about the internal affairs, emergency situations but also the foreign security, security and defence policy of the European Union. Thus observed strategy is becoming daily activity, Miscevic said.

Milasinovic pointed out that the purpose of the conference is sublimation of knowledge and implementing it in practice and needs of people and nature, as well as that it is necessary to meet and discuss such important topics.

Jovan Bazic said that today's gathering has great scientific, and above all social importance, because it addresses the complex issue of national security in the context of modern risks, and Predrag Maric also pointed out the importance of the topic mentioning the interest of participants and their large number.
