Day of the Military Security Agency
With the reception in war hall of the Old General Staff HQ 12th November - Day of the Military Security Agency was marked yesterday. The ceremony was attended by the President of the National Assembly Nebojsa Stefanovic , Defense Minister Nebojsa Rodic, Chief of the General Staff General Ljubisa Diković , including the representatives of the Serbian government , legislative, executive and judicial authorities , the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, the religious community , the diplomatic corps , as well as guests from cultural and public life.
Pointing out the importance of today's date for this service, the Director of Military Security Agency Svetko Kovac said that exactly one decade ago VBA was presented to the public.
- Law, respect for law and the norms and procedures are important features of the Military Security Agency. In the past ten years, we have not had a single case of abuse of power and authority to supervise and control the security services gave a very positive assessment of VBA - said Kovac, adding that this was primarily the result of professionalism and responsibilities of the Agency. He also pointed out that besides the training of staff in recent years special attention had been paid to equipping the modern means of operation.
According to him, the VBA has recently achieved remarkable results in combating organized criminal activities, corruption , terrorist , extremist and other threats to the defense system.
- The activities of several organized crime groups were intercepted and sanctioned and a number of corruption cases - as director Kovac remarked suggesting that some cases involving countering intelligence services had not been disclosed to the public, which should not create a false picture of the work of the service .
He said that one of the qualities VBA cooperation within the security and intelligence system of the Ministry of Defense , and the Republic of Serbia .
- Today the Military Security Agency is a modern military intelligence service , which within its jurisdiction and powers effectively protectss the defense system of the Republic of Serbia and significantly contributes to the security of all its citizens - were Svetko Kovac's words.
National Assembly Spokesperson Nebojsa Stefanovic assessed positively the cooperation of the Board for Control of Security Services with all the security agencies and the Ministry of Defence.
- This indicates that in the reform we managed to create a strong security system that guarantees peace , and that the citizens of this country can still perform their duties . Also, the VBA system , and other security services fighting against corruption and crime show that all the power of the state should be directed in that direction - said Stefanovic.
12 November is marked as the day of the security agency when on that day in 1839 the first military law was passed defining the acts of treason , espionage , rebellion and other crimes that may threaten the army and the state. It is the first legal document which comprehensively defines the issues of security protection of the military.
