Today, a delegation of the Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces laid a wreath at the Monument to Duke Sima Marković in Veliki Borak on the occasion of commemorating the 215th anniversary of establishment of the Governing Council of Serbia.

Wreaths were laid by State Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs Zoran Antić, who led the state wreath laying ceremony and paying state and military honours, representatives of the City Municipality of Barajevo and associations and citizens dedicated to fostering traditions of liberation wars of Serbia.

The ceremony was organised by Government Board for fostering traditions of liberation wars of Serbia in cooperation with the City Municipality of Barajevo.

The Governing Council of Serbia, as the first executive power body in Serbia at the time of the First Serbian Uprising and a forerunner of modern Government of the Republic of Serbia was founded on 27th August 1805 in the house of Duke Sima Marković in the village of Veliki Borak near Barajevo. The establishment of the Governing Council was one of the most important moves of the Uprising leaders led by Karađorđe, with the aim of gradual establishment of executive power bodies in an emerging state.

Though it functioned for several years, the Governing Council of Serbia represented, together with the Assembly of Leaders of the Uprising, the first permanent state body which marked the beginning of a path that rebellious Serbia took for restoration of its statehood after several centuries of the Ottoman rule.
