Unequivocal support of Serbia to a single Spain

Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin has talked today with Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain Miguel Fuertes Suarez on the cooperation of the two countries in the field of defence, the prospects for its further enhancement and the current situation in that country.

Minister Vulin expressed concern about the events in Catalonia and added that, unfortunately, in Serbia we know from our experience what kind of consequences such a situation can bring.

“Just because of everything we have gone through, the Republic of Serbia provides strong support to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Kingdom of Spain and we hope that the situation in that country will soon be settled. Mutual support for the protection of sovereignty and respect for the principles of international law is a confirmation of the true friendship between the two countries and two nations”, the Serbian defence minister said.

He said that the Republic of Serbia believes that the European Union has a duty to protect the constitutional order and sovereignty of its members.

Minister Vulin told his interlocutor that the Republic of Serbia is a reliable and honest friend of the Kingdom of Spain and is fully committed to improving bilateral cooperation in all spheres of common interest.

"The extremely friendly relations between the two countries, unburdened by open issues, represent a good basis for the development of defence cooperation. This is supported by the fact that members of our armed forces successfully cooperate and jointly carry out tasks in the United Nations multinational operation in Lebanon - UNIFIL, where the Serbian Armed Forces has the largest contingent of all ten operations in which it participates”, the defence minister said.

He emphasized that Serbia highly appreciates the principled position of the Kingdom of Spain regarding the non-recognition of the unilaterally proclaimed independence of the so-called Kosovo.

Ambassador Suarez emphasized the commitment of the Kingdom of Spain to continue with the Republic of Serbia in fostering and promoting close relations in all areas of mutual interest. He stressed that this country sincerely appreciates the support that Serbia provides to single Spain, and that by its personal efforts, it will seek to contribute to the development of bilateral relations between the two countries.
