Marking of 211th Anniversary of Battle of Ivankovac

At the Ivankovac Memorial Park near Cuprija, at the locality called "Trenches on Ivankovac", a central manifestation was held on the occasion of 211th anniversary of the Battle of Ivankovac and the first victory of the Serbian insurgents over the regular forces of the Ottoman Empire, led by Hafiz Pasha.

The ceremony began with memorial service to the fallen insurgents and state honours, singing the national anthem, laying wreaths by the delegation of the Ministry of Labour, the Serbian Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defence, municipality of Cuprija and non-governmental organizations, at the monument to the leader of the insurgents Milenko Stojkovic, which is the work of academic sculptor Milorad Mitrovic.

The Battle of Ivankovac, which took place on this day in 1805, as estimated by historians, "is one of the most significant and greatest victories of Karadjordje's insurgents, led by Milenko Stojkovic, throughout the period of the First Serbian Uprising".

"It is however a dazzling example of a tactically well-conceived and realized military operation. Having achieved victory in the famous Battle at Ivankovac, the Serbian insurgents have provided an example of insurmountable courage and patriotism that remained ingrained in the collective consciousness of the whole nation during the next two centuries", historians wrote.
