Works on demolition of part of the old General Staff began
By placing a crane in Knez Milos Street, in front of the old General Staff, the start of long-awaited work on the demolition of part of the building heavily damaged by bombing in 1999 was marked. On that occasion, Defence Minister Bratislav Gasic said everything will be done to preserve the earlier appearance of the building of the General Staff, which, inside, behind the facade, is in much worse shape than what can be seen from the outside.
-After 16 years and a public procurement procedure, we selected the contractor to demolish part of Block A of the old General Staff, ordered by the Institute for Protection of Monuments. We want to keep this front part and the connection with our old General Staff. Our goal is to equip the facility and, when all is complete, for the Serbian Armed Forces to use it for further implementation of its activities. Works will be performed in phases and should be completed in May next year. For the safety of the citizens, in certain periods, we will seek the closure of the street from the Central Railway Station to Slavija. All the time, our pyro-technicians will be with the contractors so that the safety of workers, citizens and passers-by will be at the highest level - Minister Gasic said.
Chief of the Infrastructure Department in the Ministry of Defence, Colonel Milorad Djokic stressed that all the necessary preparatory work had been completed and that the tender selected contractor "Elita Kop" is at the stage of obtaining the consent of the city to begin demolition in a safe way.
- Currently, all the documents necessary for the realization of such a complex task is under way. In the space of about five thousand square meters all necessary measures envisaged by the project will be taken, so the very complex technology is used in the safest way - Colonel Djokic said.
Estimated value of the works is about 84 million dinars.
