Cooperation with Germany in the field of defence

Regular bilateral defence consultations between the Ministry of Defence of Serbia and the Federal Ministry of Defence of Germany took place in Berlin from 13 to 14 October 2015. Head of the Department for International Military Cooperation Navy Captain Milan Konjikovac met with Head of Department of Defence Policy and Bilateral Relations Navy Captain Axel Deertz.

They exchanged views on current regional and global security issues, and special attention was paid to the dynamics of the visits of the highest level.

Navy Captain Milan Konjikovac, with gratitude for the good cooperation and support of Germany for the deployment of the SAF mobile medical team in EUTM Mali, introduced Navy Captain Deertz with the current deployment of members of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces in peacekeeping operations of the UN and the EU, and plans for the future period.

Konjikovac stressed that Serbia pays special attention to having a balanced approach in cooperation with partners in the East and the West, according to the proclaimed military neutrality, which is in the best way confirmed by the current chairmanship over the OSCE. During the meeting, Head of the Department for International Military Cooperation briefed the hosts on the achievements so far in the process of defence system reform, cooperation with the European Union, as well as activities in the framework of the Partnership for Peace Programme.

Navy Captain Axel Deertz conveyed the commitment to the realization of meetings at the highest level, as well as the promotion of joint deployment in multinational operations and reiterated the readiness to exchange experience from the engagement within the Common Security Defence Policy. Deertz welcomed Serbia’s constructive role in advancing regional cooperation and emphasized the remarkable success of the initiative, launched during the defence consultations in Berlin in November 2013, for the joint deployment of SAF members with the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Germany in the mission EUTM Mali.

During the analysis of the implementation of activities, Navy Captain Milan Konjikovac and Deputy Head of the Department for International Military Cooperation Navy Captain Markus Nolte noted the qualitative and quantitative progress in cooperation in the field of defence, in accordance with the overall political relations. Activities implemented this year, despite the limited budget and the difficulties in funding, enabled the continuation of cooperation in the key fields, as well as expansion into new areas. They emphasized the importance of practical forms of training that directly contribute to raising the level of operational and functional capabilities of the armed forces.

During the meeting the parties agreed on the Bilateral Military Cooperation Plan for 2016.
