State Secretary Djordjevic at the meeting of the Conference of National Armaments Directors



State Secretary at the Minister of Defence Zoran Djordjevic attended today in Brussels at the meeting of the under the aegis of the Conference of National Armaments Directors in the format of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council.

The Conference of National Armaments Directors is responsible for coordination of joint activities within NATO related to research, development and production of arms and military equipment and it is open for cooperation with partnership states accordingly with their needs and possibilities.

The meeting was opened by NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow who stressed the significance of the Conference in the process of implementation of decision from the recently held NATO Summit in Wales, especially the taken commitment related to the increase of the defence budget for the Alliance member states.

During the meeting, the work of the Conference of National Armaments Directors in 2014 was reviewed, as well as the improvement in process of institutionalization of combating improvised explosive devices under its aegis and the development of cooperation in this field with other NATO structures. Two joint initiatives of main armaments groups were presented, related to improvement of combat capabilities against small, slow and low-flying pilotless aircrafts (including drones) and the use of helicopters in conditions of limited visibility. At the end of the meeting, further development of the concept of “Smart Defence” was presented, accordingly with the conclusions of the NATO Summit.

As an example of many decades of successful multinational cooperation in the field of arms production, the Kingdom of Norway presented the project titled Sea Sparrow designed for development of missiles for self-protection of ships. The said project was initiated in 1960s and it is still current, considering its achievements and implementation in practice.

As previous years, the participants were also addressed by the representative of the European Defence Agency, who then stated the priorities in its work and stressed the necessity of cooperation with NATO in the field of development of defence capabilities.

At the margins of the meeting, State Secretary Zoran Djordjevic exchanged positions with the national directors of NATO member states and with the partners about current trends of development and production of armament and military equipment, and the challenges this process faces.
