Meeting of Minister of Defence and Under-Secretary-General of UN peacekeeping
Minister of Defence Bratislav Gasic and Under-Secretary-General of UN peacekeeping Herve Ladsous discussed the current and future deployment of members of the Armed Forces of Serbia in UN multinational operations.
It has been stressed that Serbia is the largest contributor of forces in UN peacekeeping operations in the region. Considering the significant increase of number of members deployed in peacekeeping operations, Serbia has become the exporter of security, with possibilities of further advancement of deploying in missions and cooperation with other countries.
210 SAF members are currently deployed in seven UN multinational operations (Liberia, Ivory Coast, Congo, Cyprus, Lebanon, the Middle East, and Central African Republic), and another 27 in three EU operations. The most significant increase was the referral of the infantry company to UNIFIL mission in Lebanon where 143 persons are deployed, and the referral of the 12-member Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachment to “Atalanta” EU mission in Somalia.
- Serbia is firmly dedicated to preserving peace in the region and in the world and we aim towards cooperation with partners and improvement of capabilities of the Armed Forces of Serbia for deployment in peacekeeping missions – Gasic stressed during the talks.
Minister of Defence pointed out that military ambulance is our strategic capacity for deployment in peacekeeping operations. Medical teams are currently deployed in missions in Somalia, Congo and the Central African Republic, and we will soon begin deploying level 2 hospital staff in the UN mission in the Central African Republic, and a medical team in EUTM in Mali. Under the stand by arrangement with UN, Serbia has also prepared an ambulance air evacuation team of six members which can be deployed accordingly with UN needs and demands.
