Respects paid to the liberators of Belgrade



Одате почасти ослободиоцима Београда On the occasion of marking the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade, at the Liberators of Belgrade cemetery and at the Monument to Killed Soviet Veterans on Avala, a state ceremony was held today, headed by Aleksandar Vulin, Serbian Minister of Labor, Employment, and Social Policy on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Serbia.

With state and military honors, aside from the Minister of Labor, wreaths were laid by representatives of the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of Serbia, the City of Belgrade, SUBNOR, and Head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Army General Valery Gerasimov, ambassadors of Russia, Belarus and Azerbaijan, and the Charge d'Affaires at the Ukrainian Embassy in Belgrade.

- Today, we celebrate freedom, and the simple historical truth that Belgrade was liberated by members of the National Liberation Army and the Red Army. History may be interpreted, but not changed – Minister Vulin said.

Одате почасти ослободиоцима Београда In further program of marking the anniversary of liberation of Belgrade in the Second World War, wreaths were laid with paid respects at the Monument to Killed Soviet Veterans on Avala.

After many days of difficult battles, members of the National Liberation Army of Yugoslavia, with the help of the Red Army forces, liberated the capital of Yugoslavia on October 20, 1944, and thus ended the four year period of occupation during which a large number of Belgrade citizens was killed, while the city suffered grave destruction.
