Meeting of the Defence Minister and the Ambassador of the United Kingdom



Defence Minister Bratislav Gasic met with the newly appointed UK Ambassador in Belgrade Denis Keefe.

It has been concluded that the cooperation in the field of defence is the best part of the entire bilateral relations of the two countries. Ministar Gasic referred his invitation to Minister Philip Hammond to visit Serbia in the future.

Gasic particularly thanked the United Kingdom for the initiative, financial aid and support during the process of establishing the new NATO Trust Fund, assigned to delaboration and destruction of surplus weapon loads in the Republic of Serbia, and to improvement of capacities of the Technical Overhauling Institution Kragujevac.

Main fields of cooperation between Serbia and the United Kingdom are military education, public relations, military medicine and reform of security sectors. So far, 14 members of the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of Serbia have finished their education at the Royal College of Defence Studies and the Defence Academy. UK also supported the Program of English Language Learning for members of the Defence Ministry and the Armed Forces of Serbia. In the field of public relations, of great importance is the donation for realization of the project of improving the image of the Defence Ministry and the Armed Forces of Serbia on the Internet and social networks. Another subject of the talks was the possibility of joint participation in military medical exercises.

Gasic and Keefe also talked about the importance of cooperation in the field of building integrity and preventing corruption. The Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Serbia is also interested in exchanging practices in the field of the Common Security and Defence Policy of the European Union. Minister Gasic thanked the UK Embassy for the donation of 67 radio-stations for the needs of field teams of the Emergency Situation Sector from the Ministry of Interior, during disastrous floods.
