Celebrating the 210th anniversary of Battle of Cokesina

At the monument to the heroes of Battle of Cokesina, in the premises of the monastery holding the same name, today, wreath laying ceremony and paying tribute marked the 210th anniversary of the battle from the First Serbian Uprising.

Wreaths were laid by envoy of the President of the Republic of Serbia, representatives of the Government and the Serbian Armed Forces, Jovan Todorovic, Mayor of Loznica, as well as representatives of the Association for preserving tradition of Serbian liberation wars.

Jovan Todorovic, Mayor of Loznica, said that in this place, 303 brave heroes and combatants gave their lives for the freedom of the country.

"Unfortunately, Loznica is an area where not only diligent, working and thinking people lived, but also the soldiers, carried by the historic need and desire of the Serbian people for freedom. Many of them gave their lives for the freedom that we enjoy today," Todorovic said.

Noting that marking 100 years since the beginning of First World War is ahead of us, Todorovic said that "history was again ruthless to us because we had two glorious battles – the Battle of Cer and first victory of the Serbian army over the Austro-Hungarian occupiers and the so-called Heavenly Battle over Kosovo, which is still studied at all military academies."

Pointing out that we will never forget our history, he said that paying tribute and respect to those who had the courage and willingness to sacrifice and give up their lives for freedom will be always practiced with piety.

After the wreath laying ceremony and paying tribute, an appropriate artistic programme was performed.

The Battle of Cokesina was waged on 28 April 1804 between the Serbian army led by brothers Nedic (Damjan and Gligorije) from Osecina and the Turkish army under the command of the Nozin-aga, near the monastery Cokesina in the vicinity of Loznica, in which 303 insurgents participated and all were killed.

List of the names of all the killed insurgents, compiled by the priest Vasilije Popovic, is also exposed on permanent display at the Military Museum at Kalemegdan, Belgrade.

The monument has been erected over the bones of the Serbian heroes that were transferred to the Cokesina monastery churchyard.
