Session of the Political Council of the Government of Serbia for the implementation of the NAP

Political Council of the Government for the implementation of the National Action Plan for the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 – Women, Peace and Security in Serbia held today the second session of this body.

This is the first meeting of the Political Council, after the Government reshuffling, in the new legislature.

The Political Council is the highest institutional body of the Government for the implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) for the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 – Women, Peace and Security in the Republic of Serbia (2010-2015), composed of the representatives of the relevant ministries of the Government for the implementation of the NAP.

Today's meeting of the Political Council confirmed the commitment of the members of that body to work together to contribute to the reform processes in the society and the improvement of the implementation of this action plan.

In light of the accession of Serbia to the European Union, the Government of the Republic of Serbia actively contributes to the processes of building peace, stability and security in their immediate neighborhood, the region and the world, through the participation of the representatives of the Republic of Serbia in multinational operations, including more and more women.

In the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, Serbia has made progress particularly in the visibility of the role of women in the security sector, increasing the representation of women in the military, police, customs, security services and in the Directorate for Execution of Criminal Sanctions.

Thanks to media and a number of educational programmes implemented in the security sector in the Republic of Serbia, there was a significant change in awareness of the role of women in the security, and the legal and institutional basis for the development of mechanisms of gender equality in society and the effective protection of women in practice has improved.

In the forthcoming months, the activities of the Political Council will focus on the possibility of improving the work of the existing institutional bodies and mechanisms for the implementation of the NAP, and towards the encouraging the cross-sector cooperation and exchange of experiences and good practices in the country and the region.

Following the adoption of the National Action Plan in December 2010, in terms of the results achieved in the implementation of UNSCR 1325, the Republic of Serbia in practice has a leading position in the region, with a clear determination to remain open to all forms of international cooperation, which should contribute to the strengthening of trust and peace in the region of the Western Balkans.
