Cooperation with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
Assistant Minister for Defence Policy Miroslav Jovanovic met with a representative of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum Radu Ioanid with whom he talked about the establishment of cooperation between the Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Military Archives of the Ministry of Defence. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Strategic Research Institute, Military Archives, Strategic Planning Department, and the U.S. Defense Attaché Colonel Paul Brotzen and representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade.
On this occasion, Assistant Minister Jovanovic said that the Military Archives preserves archival material that is of great national importance, and that it is of interest to many researchers and institutions from abroad.
"What specifically connects people is suffering and calvary they have gone through in their history, so it is of particular interest, through activities and cooperation of the institutions of the states, to create conditions that documents confirming these facts not be the subject of preservation in the archives, but to be available to the public and citizens in order not to forget the suffering and sacrifice", Jovanovic pointed out.
During the talks, it was stated that the Ministry of Defence was very interested in further cooperation with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, especially having in mind the reputation of such institution.
The representative of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Ioanid thanked for the welcome he was offered at the Ministry of Defence and said that cooperation with the Military Archives is very important for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum because of the large amount of original records of the Holocaust that is in the Military Archives, particularly emphasizing readiness of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, to assist the work of the Military Archives with donation of technical equipment for digitization.
United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is an U.S. Government agency which educates American citizens about the fate of Jews and other ethnic, religious and political groups that have been systematically persecuted during World War II by the Nazis and their allies. In accordance with its mandate, the Museum aims to create a comprehensive archive that would document the tragedy of the Holocaust.
