Lecture by Italian Defence Minister Giampaolo Di Paola in the Central Military Club

During his visit to the Serbian capital, Italian Defence Minister Giampaolo Di Paola gave a lecture entitled "From the global to the local – Security Challenges and Responses" in the Great Hall of the Central Military Club.

On this occasion, Minister Di Paola stressed the importance of visionary policy both in Italy and in Serbia and in Europe as a whole, particularly in times of crisis that is still felt. In addition, he said, in a globalized world, issues and problems should not be viewed only from a local perspective, but a wider, global, image must be seen to reach the most optimal and long-term solutions.

According to the Italian Minister of Defence, Europe is now at a crossroads, and it is the right time to introduce a new set of rules in order to build stronger and more complete family of European countries, which, as he assessed, is not an easy job having in mind the fiscal constraints.

Speaking about current security issues, Minister Di Paola pointed out that national security is not something that should be solved by the Ministry of Defence or the army of a country, but the Government, indicating that it is the right time to raise awareness about that issue.

As a special continuation of the second Belgrade Security Forum, a lecture was organized by the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy, the European Movement in Serbia and the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Serbia and with the support of the United Nations Development Programme.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, diplomats, non-governmental organizations and academic institutions.
