Minister Vucic meets with the defence minister of Cyprus



First Vice president of the Serbian Government and Minister of Defence Aleksandar Vucic met with Defence Minister of Cyrpus Demetris Eliades in Nicosia yesterday.

At the beginning of the meeting, Minister Vucic stressed the need for the development of military-economic cooperation, proposing export of our arms and ammunition to Cyprus and called on the Cypriot counterpart to Serbian defence industry factories.

Vucic expressed the Government of the Republic of Serbia’s gratitude for the principled stance of Cyprus regarding the Kosovo issue , while stressing the importance of Cyprus’s support to Serbia joining the European Union.

"The Serbs are not only good partners, but also friends and it is the position of the entire nation, not just of the government of Cyprus," said Eliades, stressing Cyprus’s support to Serbia on its path towards the European Union. He said during the meeting that Cyprus would never recognize Kosovo, as it was a matter of principle, but this principle was in accordance with the international law.

Regarding the resolution of the Cyprus issue, Minister Eliades said he was pessimistic about but Minister Vucic on the participation of members of the Serbian Armed Forces in United Nations peacekeeping mission in Cyprus, noting that Serbian soldiers were among the best.

Vucic began a three-day visit to Cyprus with this meeting, where he is participating at the EU defence minister’s meeting. On the sidelines of the meeting, Vucic have bilateral meetings with defence ministers of eight countries of the European Union and EU candidate countries.

During the visit, Minister Vucic will visit the Serbian Army contingent engaged in the United Nations peacekeeping operation in Cyprus-UNFICYP- and will meet with the Head of Mission and Chief of Staff of the UNFICYP Forces.
