Deployment of representatives of MoD and SAF to European Union mission EUTM Somalia in Uganda

By deployment of the medical colonel Slaviše Ciric, Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Military Hospital in Nis, Serbia has begun participation in a multinational operation led by the European Union, EUTM Somalia in Uganda. In the next six months, Colonel Ciric will be engaged as the head of the Uganda Medical Services in EUTM mission in Somalia.

In this way Serbian Ministry of Defence continues and extends the successful cooperation with the European Union in the field of joint participation in peace support missions. As in early April the first officer of the Serbian Armed Forces was deployed to the mission of the European Union forces in the Somali Republic – EUNAVFOR Somalia - Operation ATALANTA, today begins the participation of the representatives of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces in another mission of the European Union mission – mission for training security forces in the Somali Republic in Uganda - EUTM Somalia.

The mission of the European Union for the training of Somali security forces in Uganda - EUTM Somalia was established on 7 April 2010 by the UN Security Council Resolution No 1872 (2009) and by decisions of the European Union No 96 and 197 (2010) to support the strengthening of state institutions of Somalia. The task of the mission is to support the transitional government, aid to the people and the stabilization of the current situation through training and equipping of Somali security forces. Military training is conducted in Uganda, where security risks are lower than in Somalia. The mission is carried out in cooperation with the United Nations and African Union Mission in Somalia (AMIS).

Participation of Colonel Ciric in the EUTM Somalia mission by the European Union is considered as a "significant contribution" of the Republic of Serbia to the joint effort to overcome the problems in Somalia, because of the importance of the duty that he will perform the mission.

In 2012, Minister of Defence plans to engage a 5-member medical team in EUTM Somalia, and eight members of the Serbian Armed Forces in the Headquarters of the stated mission and two rotations have been planned .
