Marking the breakthrough of the Srem Front



With state and military honors today at the Sid 67th anniversary of the breakthrough of Srem Front, was marked, which marked the end of the Second World War in Serbia.

At the memorial complex "Srem front" wreaths were laid by the Spokesperson of the National Assembly Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, Acting President, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Ivica Dacic and State Secretary at the Ministry of Defence Igor Jovicic. Wreaths were also laid by representatives of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, SUBNOR delegations and embassies of allied countries in World War II.

Laying of wreaths and cultural-artistic program was attended by several thousands of people from Serbia and the region. The he organizers of the manifestation are the Committee of the Serbian government for preserving the tradition, the Ministry of Defence and Sid municipality.

The Srem Front, in the history of the battle for national liberation, has remained one of the longest, toughest and most glorious tests during war, which the army passed during the liberation of Yugoslavia. In trench battles from October 1944 to 12 April 1945 some 250,000 soldiers fought on both sides. During 170 days more than 13,000 members of the National Liberation Army were killed, along with 1,800 soldiers of the Red Army and the Bulgarian People's Army and the "Italy" brigade. Losses of German and Croat forces in the Srem front were much higher and are estimated at around 30 thousand lives.

After the breakthrough of the Srem Front, in accordance with the general Allied offensive, the forces of the Yugoslav Army, in a short time, freed the whole territory of Yugoslavia, including Istria and the Slovenian coast, while several units from the Srem front reached even Trieste, Italy.
