Delegation of the Ministry of Defence in working visit to the UK



Delegation of the Ministry of Defence headed by the State Secretary Tanja Miscevic payed a working visit to the UK Ministry of Defence from 28 to 30 March. During the visit, the first bilateral defence consultations and meeting with the Minister of State for the Armed Forces Nick Harvey were held, and the views were exchanged on the reform process in Serbia. In addition to the delegation of the Ministry of Defence, part of the discussion was attended by representatives of the Office of the President, the Foreign Office and the Home Office.

In an interview with the Minister for the Armed Forces Harvey, the views were exchanged on security sector reform, as a consequence of the economic crisis and the new security challenges that are predominantly of asymmetric character. The importance of establishing standards and procedures for the successful engagement in the international environment was pointed out.

At the meeting with Steve McCarthy, the Director for International Security Policy, the correspondence regarding security interests, restrictions and impacts on the implementation of plans was discussed, as well as possible assistance to the UK in implementing the goals.

During the bilateral defence consultations, the topics that were discussed were the reform of the defence system in the UK and Serbia, professionalisation, involvement in peacekeeping operations, cooperation with the European Union and NATO, standardization and codification, public diplomacy, intelligence cooperation and regional security and improving capacities. At the end of the meeting, the framework for future cooperation in the field of defence was agreed.

In addition to the meeting at the UK Ministry of Defence, inter-branch delegation visited the UK missions to the EU and NATO in Brussels.
