President Tadic and Minister Sutanovac visited "Kulina" Centre

President of the Republic of Serbia Boris Tadic and Minister of Defence Dragan Sutanovac, accompanied by the Serbian Armed Forces Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General Ljubisa Dikovic, Deputy Chief of General Staff Major General Milan Bjelica and Army Commander Major General Milan Mojsilovic, visited the Kulina Centre for accommodation of adults in the vicinity of Aleksinac.

Kulina Centre is a social welfare institution whose main activity is accommodation of adult persons with hard and severe mental disabilities. Four hundred and eight users currently accommodated at the institution are taken care of by over two hundred workers, who are mainly involved in direct work with individuals accommodated in the Centre.

The director of the institution, Goran Petkovic, pointed out that the assistance of the Armed Forces at critical moments in the work of the Centre was crucial.

"In the period from August to November 2010, after many months of drought, we were without drinking water, and we approached the local utility companies both in Nis and Aleksinac, but there were simply no capacities, because our daily needs were great. After we had we approached the Ministry of Defence, the army arrived and supplied us with drinking water for three months," said the director of "Kulina" adding that the Armed Forces provided significant assistance to the users of the Centre also in the winter period.

"In January and February this year, we were cut off from Aleksinac and Nis twice, and thanks to the intervention of the army, we managed to bring in basic food, and to move our users to larger medical centres", Petkovic said.

On that occasion, as a token of our gratitude, the representatives of the Kulina Centre presented Minister Sutanovac a letter of gratitude.

Experts in the Centre, besides general health care services, provide also social and educational services. Users of the facilities have at their disposal also therapists, psychologists, sociologists and speech therapists who work directly with them.

In 2011, the Centre was subjected to substantial transformation in several fields, first of all by moving users under the age of eighteen, and users who were under increased medical care and health protection, while currently actions are being implemented to improve the quality of life and services for the adult users who remain in the accommodation.
