Annual Awards of the Public Relations Department and "Odbrana" Media Centre



It was for the second time that Public Relations Department awarded Special journalism award of the Ministry of Defence for the best promotional television programme, and the "Odbrana" Media Centre awarded this year the "Ivan Markovic" journalism award and declared the best athlete and sports team in the Serbian Armed Forces for the year 2011.

The Public Relations Department gave Special journalism award of the Ministry of Defence for the best promotional television programme to Veselin Grozdanic and Maca Pop Cenic from the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation (RTS), for the realization of direct broadcasting of the promotion ceremony for new officers of the Serbian Armed Forces, on RTS 1, on 10 September 2011.

The winning team of RTS has made so far six direct television broadcasts of the promotion ceremony of new officers of the Serbian Armed Forces, which was seen every year by more than a million viewers. The special journalism award was given to programme that promotes the activities of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces in an original, creative and affirmative way.

Works from different media have applied for the "Ivan Markovic" journalism award – agency, print and electronic media, national and local media, with very different profiles, circulation and editorial policy. The jury gave the award to a journalist of Serbian Broadcasting Corporation, Branko Stankovic for the "Squaring the Circle" programme on the Fourth Army Brigade, which was broadcasted on the RTS first channel on 22nd October 2011.

The explanation states that "the programme comprehensively, thoroughly and attractively presents the Fourth Army Brigade, which, among other tasks, protects the Ground Safety Zone in Kosovo and Metohija. The contest propositions provide award for an affirmative presentation of the Serbian Armed Forces. This programme makes it completely, showing willingness and ability of the Armed Forces to carry out complex tasks, representing its members in a military job, but also regarding their everyday relations towards the community which they are a part of."

The jury for awarding the "Ivan Markovic" journalism award consisted of Snjezana Milivojevic, PhD, a full professor with the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade (Jury President), Milan Galovic, Editor of the "Politika" newspaper, Vera Potpari?, Editor of the "Beta" agency, Ana Miletic, a representative of the Public Relations Department, and Vladimir Ristic, a former journalist of the "National Army" and "Military" journals.

The jury for the selection of the best athletes and sports teams of the Serbian Armed Forces stated that the military sports, both in individual and in team competition, at the national and international competitions, in 2011, saw the top results.

As the best athlete of the Serbian Armed Forces for the last year, Sergeant Dejan Vukojevic, a shooter, from the Army Training Centre, was declared, and the most successful sports team was the ski team of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces. Special award for the promotion of sports and the development of civil-military cooperation was awarded to the "Heavenly Angels" soccer club from the Fourth Army Brigade from Vranje.

Sergeant Dejan Vukojevic won the first place in shooting from a 9 mm pistol CZ99 in the championship of the Serbian Armed Forces, first place in practical shooting in the state competition and 63rd placement at the World Championship in practical shooting, among 1,400 participants. He is a member of the national team in practical shooting.

Members of the ski team of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces won the fourth place in alpine skiing, in the discipline of giant slalom, in the 51st World Military Skiing Championship in Sarajevo, in February 2011, among 23 teams.

In 2011, the "Heavenly Angels" soccer club won the Pcinja District Cup and Pcinja District League Championship. Sports competitions and gatherings of the members of the club with the athletes from Vranje and Pcinja area have contributed to the promotion of civil-military cooperation between the Fourth Brigade and the Serbs, Albanians, Roma and Bulgarians living in that area.

President of the jury for awarding the sports awards was the State Secretary Zoran Jevtic, the Head of the Serbian Delegation to CISM, and the members were Predrag Manojlovic, a representative of the Serbian Olympic Committee, Colonel Zoran Scekic from the Office of Minister of Defence, Lieutenant Stevan Stojanovic, the best athlete of the Serbian Armed Forces in 2010, and Major Vladimir Po?u?, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of "Odbrana" journal.

The awards will be presented at the ceremony on the occasion of the "Odbrana" Media Centre, at the Serbian Military Club in Belgrade, on 24th January.
