Reports on the work of VBA and VOA adopted

Security Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia has adopted today reports on the work of the Military Security and Intelligence Agency in the past six months.

The Director of Military Intelligence Agency Svetko Kovac informed the Committee members about the agency's work in the period from 1 May-1 November this year, stating that the unilateral declaration of independence, organized crime and the effect of certain criminal and terrorist groups are still the biggest threat to the security situation in Serbia.

He said that after the arrest of a group of Ljiram Jakupi has significantly reduced the risk of compromising safety in the Ground Safety for Kosovo and Metohija.

"Although the security situation in southern Serbia was relatively stable, there are indicators that suggest the possibility of becoming more complex," he said. Speaking about the situation in Sandzak, Kovac pointed out that people in this area have shown an increased confidence in the Serbian Army, which bespeaks of an increased confidence of professional members of the Bosnians, which is ten times more than last year, and that there is no indication of immediate threat to Army units and facilities in the area.

The committee also considered and adopted the Report on the Military Intelligence Agency for the period 1 June to 1 December. Deputy Director of the agency Brigadier General Dragan Vladisavljevic said that the Balkans in late 2010 were a relatively stable area, although the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Metohija and in Macedonia continues to attract international attention. When it comes to Serbia’s security the most affected region is most Kosovo and Metohija. The Intelligence Agency monitors a decrease in the number of KFOR troops and the strengthening of the executive functions of the EULEX mission, in terms of stability and vulnerability of the Serbian population.

General Vladisavljevi? stated that in late October, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization decided to move to the next stage of engagement of KFOR, which means a decrease of about 3,500 soldiers by April next year, which is the most important process from the standpoint of national security of Serbia.

He pointed out also that the VOA focused on the changes taking place in the European Union, especially the reform of its foreign and security policy, which provides an opportunity for countries in the region, including Serbia, to increase their chances for membership in the Union.

As one of the security challenge, Gen. Vladisavljevi? has isolated the connection between religious extremism and organized crime, and the priorities stated in the next year are to improve the quality of information collection and processing of intelligence information of interest to the system of defense, improving military-diplomatic activities and cooperation with the intelligence and security services in home and abroad.
