A fire broke out at the ‘Peskovi’ training ground near Veliko Gradište today around noon, which, at around 3 p.m., due to strong winds, rapidly spread over an area of several hectares covered with grass and low vegetation. A Serbian Armed Forces unit that also included a firefighting team with a water tanker, immediately began extinguishing the fire.
 
In addition to almost 200 members of the Serbian Armed Forces, two military engineering vehicles, a fire truck and one special helicopter of the Air Force and Air Defence, as well as two helicopters from the Ministry of the Interior, were involved in extinguishing the fire. The helicopters were involved in extinguishing the fire in the nearby weekend settlement of Vinci with the priority task of protecting human lives and property.
 
The intervention involved also 32 members of the fire brigade of the Emergency Management Department with 14 fire trucks from Požarevac, Petrovac, Veliko Gradiste and Žabar, with the participation of the fire brigades of Smederevo, Zvezdara and Pančevo.
 
Eight members of the Volunteer Fire Brigade with two vehicles, one tanker from the ‘Nucleus’ company as well as two pieces of heavy equipment were also involved in the operation.
 
The fire was contained at 8:10 pm.
