New emblems of SAF presented

New emblems and markings of the Serbian Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defense were presented today to the media by Undersecretary Igor Jovicic, Public Relations Department Navy Captain Petar Boskovic and Major Jovica Milak of the SAF GS. The project of the new visual identity was realized with the support of the Kingdom of Norway and the Jefferson Institute.

The presentation was attended by Undersecretaries Zoran Jeftic and Zoran Vesic, Deputy CHOD of SAF LTG Mladen Cirkovic, Ambassador of Norway to Serbia Hakon Blankenborg and the representatives of the defense system.

Undersecretary Igor Jovicic expressed great pleasure at seeing today’s presentation of new emblems just happening just before the Independence Day of Serbia and the Day of the Serbian Armed Forces-15 February. He also spoke of the significance of the emblems on various levels and the symbolism of specific solutions, also announcing continuation on promoting the visual identity of SAF members.

– In making new emblems the Ministry was very careful about pointing out what civilization and cultural circle the Serbian Armed Forces belonged to. Such symbols as oak twigs, laurel wreaths and a knight’s sword and shield reflect the traditional values cherished by our country and nation, as they are deeply rooted in the Serbian tradition. These emblems send a message of belonging to a military guild as well as the special attitude towards the statehood of the Republic of Serbia. It is important to say that anyone who sees our emblems can without any doubt be sure that these are the emblems of Serbia, as Jovicic said.

Navy Captain Petar Boskovic thanked the Norwegian ambassador for all the help this friendly country has provided in order to realize such an important project. Furthermore, as the Chief of the Public Relations Department remarked this was a long process which started back in 2007 when the new coat of arms of the Serbian armed forces was first promoted as well as the SAF emblems in line with NATO standards.

He said that this process was not long only in terms of norms applied during the process, but also because we needed to gather art historians , designers and heraldic experts who all worked in finding a unified solution tapping into the Serbian tradition, in order to capture the traditional yet a functional and modern look. This will result in a completely new effect in presenting the Serbian Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defense.

Major Jovica Milak, a commander who visualized the new emblems, spoke of every single emblem, that is the flags of units, CS coat of arms, the coat of arms of the Army, of the Air Force, and the Training Command. Major Milak went to explain the heraldic value of every single symbol as well as the tradition used while designing emblems.
