Minister Stefanović with Chairs of Defence Committee and Group for Serbia in British Parliament

Today, in the Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Nebojša Stefanović PhD met Chair of Defence Committee Tobias Ellwood, and Chair of Parliamentary Group for Serbia of the House of Commons of the Parliament Andrew Bridgen.

Minister Stefanović evaluated that such talks represent, not only an opportunity to exchange opinions in a constructive dialogue on topical issues, but they certainly contribute to mutual understanding and further development of the cooperation between the two countries which is something that possesses significant potential.

He expressed his satisfaction with the hitherto military-to-military cooperation, highlighting joint training and exercises of members of the two armed forces, which contribute to the strengthening of operational capabilities of the Serbian Armed Forces, as well as the joint participation in UN and EU missions. The minister pointed out that Serbia is a militarily neutral country, whose chief foreign policy goal is the membership in the European Union. He stated that our country is dedicated to preservation of regional stability and economic growth, which is unequivocally demonstrated by the initiative of the President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić titled “Open Balkans” aimed at achieving better standard of living of all citizens and building partner relations and cooperation in the Western Balkans.

Chair of Defence Committee of the Parliament Tobias Ellwood evaluated the bilateral relations between the two countries as good, particularly in the field of defence, but he noted that there is room for its further enhancement.

Tobias, just like Bridgen at a separate meeting, assessed that Serbia plays a significant role in the stability of our region, and that economic cooperation is a field where there is the most room for the enhancement of relations between the United Kingdom and Serbia. On this occasion Chair of the Parliamentary Group for Serbia Bridgen pointed out that the United Kingdom is oriented towards the development of cooperation with Serbia.
