Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Nebojša Stefanović, PhD, met today with the Ambassador of Greece to Serbia, Mr Yorgos Diacofotakis.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Minister of Defence highlighted the traditionally good and friendly relations between the two countries. He expressed gratitude to Greece for providing continuous support for the preservation of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Stefanović also expressed hope that the cooperation in the field of defence would reach the level of overall relations between the two countries and said that it was important for the military cooperation to follow the accelerated pace of economic and political cooperation between the two countries.
He emphasized our commitment to intensify cooperation in the field of defence, respecting each other’s interests, especially when it came to military to military cooperation, joint military exercises and military economic cooperation.

Minister of Defence expressed hope that this year, depending on the epidemiological situation, the Minister of National Defence of Greece would come to visit Serbia.

Ambassador Diacofotakis pointed out that there was considerable potential for quality improvement in all fields of cooperation, while the military to military cooperation could be intensified not only bilaterally, but multilaterally.

As for the current consideration of the idea of reintroducing compulsory military service in Serbia, he also proposed an exchange of experiences in that area, given that Greece had compulsory military service and that it would be extended from nine months to a year as of May 2021.

Ambassador Diacofotakis also emphasized the support for Serbia’s European integration and engagement under the auspices of the Common Security and Defence Policy, such as participation in the HELBROC battle group, as well as participation in peace-keeping operations.
