Remembering Romani Genocide during Second World War

Today, a delegation representing the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces attended the wreath-laying ceremony at the mass grave of civilians killed in the Second World War in the memorial-complex “Stratište“ in Jabuka near Pančevo, to commemorate the International Romani Genocide Remembrance Day.
The state ceremony was led by State Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Miodrag Kapor, and the ceremony was also attended by the representatives of the city of Pančevo, Roma National Council, representatives of the diplomatic corps, associations committed to nurturing the traditions of the Serbian liberation wars and citizens.

The commemoration was held in memory of 16 December 1942 when Heinrich Himmler issued an order to send all Roma to concentration camps for their systematic extermination. The genocide of the Roma or Porajmos is one of the most tragic events in the Second World War.
