103rd anniversary of Toplca Uprising marked

State ceremony in the center of Prokuplje, near the Monument to the Toplica men killed in the Wars of 1912-1918 and the victims of the popular uprising in 1917 marked the 103rd anniversary of the outbreak of the Toplica Uprising.
Members of the Ministry of Defense and the Serbian Armed Forces, the Ministry of Labor, Veteran and Social Affairs, representatives of the Toplica Administrative District and the city of Prokuplje, as well as members of numerous associations that cherish and uphold the traditions of the liberation wars paid tribute to the fallen heroes by laying wreaths. Artistic program was also organized by the Cultural Center in Prokuplje.

The uprising, which included the areas of Toplica and Jablanica in late February and early March 1917 and spread to other parts under Bulgarian occupation, is an integral part of the liberation struggle of the Serbian people in World War I. The uprising was an extension of the resistance that began in Serbia from the moment the Serbian Army withdrew through Albania and lasted almost until its return to the homeland. It was the one and only uprising behind all the frontlines that was based on an elemental organization and a clear conception of the struggle for freedom.
