International women’s football tournament



The international women’s football tournament has been held today in the Sports Centre of the Military Academy with female members of the military representations of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Serbia, the United Kingdom and Bosnia and Herzegovina as participants. It is a traditional military sports meetings of the countries in the region. On the initiative and with support of the UK Embassy in Serbia this year these meetings have been designed as women’s futsal tournament in order to promote gender equality in the armed forces.
 
Opening the competition, the Head of the Military Academy Major General Goran Zekovic expressed his contentment with the fact that this high education military establishment is the host of the friendly sports event, emphasizing that it is one in a series of events marking the upcoming Day of the Serbian Armed Forces, which is marked on 23rd April.
 
General Zekovic wished a lot of success at the tournament to the sports teams, and good time during the stay in our country.
 
The UK Defence Attache Colonel Simon Fitzgibbon thanked the Military Academy for hospitality, pointing out that these sports meetings are an excellent opportunity for gender equality promotion and also for experience exchange with the members of foreign armed forces. He told the tournament participants to give their best on the way to victory and wished a fair competition and good luck.
 
At the first match on the tournament today the Serbian representation played against the UK representation followed by the match between the UK and Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The representation of Bosnia and Herzegovina won the first place with a goal advantage over the second placed Serbia whereas female members of the UK military representation won the third place.
 
The captain of the Serbian military representation in women’s football is Second Lieutenant Jelena Sulic, and referees from the Football Association of Serbia are in charge of regularity at matches.
