Perspectives for Development of Serbian Defence Industry

Ministers of Defence and Economy, Zoran Đorđević and Goran Knežević and the Director of Jugoimport SDPR Jugoslav Petković discussed the perspectives for development of Serbian Defence Industry in the period to come.

Having in mind that this is one of the segments most important for development of national economy, Đorđević, Knežević and Petković have analysed the trends in that area in order to consider the possibilities for future investments in defence industry, so that, in the years ahead, the export in that particular field could exceed the figure of one billion US dollars.

Namely, if the level of investment remains as expected, this year’s export value will increase by 20% in relation to 2016, when the export earnings were 483 million dollars, which will certainly contribute to defence industry employment rate.

During the meeting, it was stated that all the factories of that branch are in profit, they regularly honour their obligations towards the state without debts in terms of their current operations, while it was confirmed that a significant condition for development in the field of defence industry was the Conclusion of the Government of Serbia, which is expected to be passed soon, regarding the conversion of defence industry debts which would make the position of the entire sector much more favourable after a long period of time.

Likewise, it was concluded during the meeting, that a lot was expected from the Law on Production of Arms and Military Equipment, which is soon to be in the Parliament procedure, and that should bring about many positive novelties.

The meeting provided an opportunity to sum up the results of the participation of representatives of Serbian defence industry and the Ministry of Defence and 13th International Exhibition of Arms and Military Equipment IDEX 2017 in Abu Dhabi, where the presentation of our defence industry attracted exceptional attention.
