Minister Djordjevic meets Foreign Affairs Minister of Iraq



Defence Minister Zoran Djordjevic with associates has met the delegation of the Republic of Iraq led by Iraqi Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Ibrahim al-Eshaiker al-Jaafari.

Djordjevic stressed that two countries and nations are connected by historical ties and almost 60 years long traditionally good relations, similar joint destiny and great suffering from the wars in recent period, as well as dignity, integrity and common values. He emphasized that certain link between two nations and countries is represented by a great number of Iraqi citizens who have completed their studies at Belgrade University, and hold today prominent positions in Iraqi institutions.
 
Minister conveyed gratitude of our country to Iraq for the support in defending principles of the international law and preservation of territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Serbia through non-recognition of Kosovo.
 
Iraqi side has been informed of the current position and attitudes of official Belgrade to the significant issues for Serbia, the EU accession process, the engagement of members of the Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces in multinational operations, as well as the activities and results of the Joint Force on preventing crossing and smuggling of illegal migrants at the territory of Serbia.

Besides military-economic cooperation as the priority, the readiness of Serbian Ministry of Defence to develop collaboration in military education, medicine and all other fields of mutual interest with Iraqi side has been expressed.
The attitudes to current political and security situation in the region of the Western Balkans and the Middle East have been exchanged with a special emphasis laid on the current migrant crisis and also the problem of terrorism. 
 
Two sides have confirmed the mutual interest for further improvement and intensification of strategic partnership in defence.
