Marking armistice day in WWI
Armistice Day in World War I - 11 November was marked in Serbia today for the second time as a public holiday , by paying tribute and laying of wreaths at the memorial in memory of the innocent victims from 1914 to 1918.
With full state and military honors , the President of the Republic of Serbia , Tomislav Nikolic , accompanied by Defence Minister Nebojsa Rodic and Chief of General Staff General Dikovic , laid a wreath at the Monument to the Unknown Hero on Avala.
"Many people owe Serbia, Serbia owes you. Without you, this would be someone else's land, someone else's language would be spoken, other people songs would be sung . On behalf of grateful Serbia which is respectful and remembers, "as President Nikolic wrote in the memorial book .
The ceremony of laying wreaths near the crypt of the defenders of Belgrade in World War I , the New Cemetery , was led by Prime Minister Ivica Dacic . Wreaths were laid at the French military cemetery , near the Memorial Chapel to the Russian warriors and the Commonwealth Cemetery .
The wreath laying ceremony in front of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces was attended by the State Secretary Zoran Djordjevic and Assistant Minister for Defence Miroslav Jovanovic, a wreath was laid at the memorial delegation led by Major General Mlađen Nišević , Deputy Commander of the Training Department.
Within the wreath laying ceremony at the French military cemetery , Ambassador of France Francois - Xavier Denio presented the Medal of the National Order of Merit in the rank of Knight to Colonel Vojislav Krstović , former defense attaché of Serbia in Paris.
Wreaths were placed today at the memorial complex in the new cemetery by representatives of the City of Belgrade and the Embassy of France , the Russian Federation , Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Greece , Italy, USA , Romania, Netherlands , Belgium, Austria , Hungary, Slovakia , the Czech Republic, Germany , Bulgaria and NGOs.
Armistice in World War I was signed on 11 November in 1918 in Compiegne in France when the Allied Powers signed armistice with Germany thus ending the First World War .
In Serbia, the Armistice Day as a national holiday has been celebrated since 2012 and before that it has been celebrated in the first grades in elementary and secondary schools in Serbia since 2005. The emblem of the holiday , which is worn on the lapel , a flower motif and Queen Natalija's ramonda and a ribbon as a symbol of Albanian memory medal.
