Presentation of CASM project in OSCE



Brigadier General Bojan Zrnic, Chief of the Defence Technology Department and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the project "Capacity Development for Conventional Ammunition Stockpiles Management in the Republic of Serbia – CASM" participated in the meeting of the OSCE Forum for Security Cooperation in Vienna. Ivan Zverzhanovski from the United nations Development Programme (UNDP ) in Serbia, who is the programme manager of the project also took part in the its work.

The current implementation of the project was evaluated in the discussion as very successful and the project was highlighted as an example of good joint action of the OSCE, UNDP and the Government of Serbia, aimed at improving human security, regional stability, and the environmental protection. Current implementation of the project was assessed as successful by the EU representative to the OSCE.

In addition to the UNDP, the CASM project was supported through donations also by eleven OSCE Member States: Spain, Germany, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Turkey, Denmark, Norway, Czech Republic, Luxembourg, France and Hungary, with a total of about 808,000 dollars. During the meeting, Denmark announced a new donation of 30,000 euros.

The CASM project was established at the request of the Government of Serbia addressed to the OSCE and UNDP, in June 2011, seeking assistance to increase the level of safety and security of conventional munitions storage "Mirnička River" and "Mrsac", develop infrastructure of TRZ Kragujevac for the purpose of improving the process of disassembly of ammunition, i.e. disassembly of surplus ammunition filled with white phosphorus, special ammunition and napalm powder.

Within the implementation of the CASM project, so far the removal of 161 tons of surplus napalm powder was completed. The process of disassembly of ammunition filled with white phosphorus in the TRZ Kragujevac is underway and its preparation for a phased transportation to a location abroad where it will be finally destroyed, as well as development of the planning documents for the reurbanisation of ammunition depots of "Mirnička River" and "Mrsac".
