150 years since the building of Ascension Church in Belgrade

150 years ago the temple of the Ascension of the Lord in Belgrade was built and consecrates. The Church of Lord’s Ascension was a military church in the Kingdom of Serbia and Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In the vicinity the Serbian guard was stationed and the Military Academy and the barracks were located which is why a military church was built to serve the needs of soldiers. The strong link between the two institutions was marked first by a liturgy, which was served at 9 am by Bishop Jovan ( Djulibrk ) with the help of newly appointed priests of the Serbian Army .

Jubilee celebration was continued in the hall of the Serbian army in the evening. The program was led by captain Dejan Lazarevic , our spiritual history was revived with the ethnic chanting of Milica Maric and actors Ivan Vuckovic and Mladen Milic, saying parts of the play "Karadjordje kojekude ."

First the guests were addressed by Colonel Borislav Grozdic , professor of ethics at the Military Academy :

- The anniversary is not what the church needs but it is rather we who need it, we, the nation suffering a terrible illness a disease and plague of the modern world is the feeling of meaninglessness, a sense that all values are destroyed , that the answer to the question “why” remains without answer. And what better response than 150 years later repeating the same sacred liturgy and serving God . Everything is temporary, the purpose of the liturgy is eternal.

A similar message was shared with the participants and officers by the Head Priest of Ascension Church Arsenije Arsenijevic :

- We are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the building of the Temple , or more precisely of its consecration , from the beginning of the service, because the church is being built constantly . We are the ones who build it, but what is important is the fact that the temple is building us as well. We are the ones build ourselves into the foundation of the Church of Ascension with out faith.
