SAF officers successful in UN mission
Five of the Serbian Army officers, who are engaged in the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, are successfully carrying out their duties, said Deputy Commander of Joint Operations Command, Maj. Gen. Goran Radovanovic.
After visiting five members of the Serbian Army who are part of the Spanish contingent of peacekeepers in Lebanon, he told Tanjug news agency that the Serbian "blue helmets", performing the duties of staff officers had no problems in carrying out everyday tasks.
Radovanovic, who is leading the delegation of the Ministry of Defense and the Army of Serbia, added that the purpose of the visit was "consideration of possible future involvement of our members in this very important mission to the UN."
"Peace has been provided in this region and for a long time there have been no incidents and all our members are in good health," he said in a telephone statement to the Serbian national news agency.
Apart from visiting the "Miguel Cervantes" barracks where the Spanish peacekeepers are accommodated, the delegation of the Serbian system of defense visited the eastern and western sector of peacekeeping forces.
Radovanovic said he had spoken with the head of the mission and the commander of military forces, Major General Paolo Sero and Commander of the "East" sector Brigadier General Julio Islo.
"Over the past two days we visited the eastern and western sectors, the United Nations command and we will also visit certain points on the so called " blue line "in order to review specific tasks and missions," he added.
In the past, Serbian officials announced the possibility of increasing the number of members of the Defense Ministry and the Serbian Army, with SAF using its own technology and weaponry in the peacekeeping mission.
Apart from Lebanon, members of the Defense Ministry and the Serbian Armed Forces are also participating in UN peacekeeping operations in Congo, Liberia and the Ivory Coast and Cyprus.
