Commemoration of the 74th Anniversary of the Srem Front Breach




Today, in the Memorial Complex the “Srem Front” in Adaševci near Šid, а state ceremony was held to mark the 74th anniversary of the breach of Srem Front, the operation which began the final battles for the liberation of Yugoslavia in the Second World War.
 
A delegation of the Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces, which paid homage and laid wreaths in honour of the fallen, was led by Brigadier General Željko Petrović. The ceremony was attended by representatives of national and provincial authorities, municipality of Šid, national and provincial SUBNOR, participants of the People’s Liberation War, their descendants and numerous delegations from the country and abroad.
 
Some 250,000 soldiers of the both sides participated in the battle that was being waged for 175 days, from 21st October 1944 to 12th April 1945. Together with the units of the Yugoslav Army, the troops of the Red Army and Bulgarian People’s Army participated in the battle, as well as a Brigade “Italy”.
 
Around 13,500 Yugoslav soldiers, mostly young men from Serbia and Montenegro died in hard and bloody battles, waged in snow and wind, together with 1,100 members of the Red Army, 630 members of the Bulgarian People’s Army and 163 Italians from the Yugoslav units.
 
The breach of the Srem Front marked the end of the Second World War in the territory of the Republic of Serbia.
