Serbian Armed Forces helping with road reconstruction near Prokuplje

For the past two weeks, members of the Serbian Armed Forces have been working on the reconstruction of a road connecting the villages of Merovac, Belogoš, and Donja Rečica, in the area surrounding Prokuplje.
The work on this six-kilometre stretch is being done by an engineer task force from the 310th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Army Brigade, as part of their regular training and in cooperation with the public utility company based in Prokuplje.

The road section commander, Staff Sergeant 1st Class Petar Ilić, explained that the road had sustained significant damage due to prolonged use, so repair work began on October 20.
- So far, we have cut the vegetation and widened the road on both the left and right sides, patched potholes, and dug culverts for surface water drainage. We are now laying gravel, levelling the surface, and compacting the base. The locals are pleased. They welcomed us warmly and are very happy. This is the only road that connects these three villages - explained Staff Sergeant Ilić, adding that members of the 310th Engineer Battalion had also assisted the local community last month when, at the initiative of the Municipality of Bela Palanka, they restored the yard of the Monastery of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, in the village of Veta.

Vladica Jovanović, president of the local community of Belogoš, explained that the road had not been maintained for quite some time. Besides the residents of the three aforementioned villages, people from another ten to twelve villages also use this stretch of road to go to school, work, and the doctor’s.
- Roads are a vital element of our lives. We wouldn't be able to make it through the winter if this hadn’t been done. I want to say a huge thank you to both the military and the municipality, especially to the unit that arrived at the site with construction machines. The villagers are overjoyed at the road improvements, because without the road, we would be completely cut off from the rest of the world - Jovanović said.

In line with their annual engagement plans, the engineering units of the Serbian Armed Forces carry out similar projects in other parts of the country as well. Through projects like, they improve their readiness for engineering tasks in military operations and provide support to local communities, demonstrating that they are always at the service of the homeland and the citizens of the Republic of Serbia.
