“A Touch with the Past” Exhibition Opens
An exhibition titled “A Touch with the Past” was officially opened today at the Military Museum Gallery in Kalemegdan Park, on the occasion of August 22, Military Museum Day.
The exhibition showcasing 74 museum items that have been conserved and restored by Military Museum experts, was officially opened by the Head of the Personnel Department of the Ministry of Defence, Brigadier General Zlatko Mišić.In his opening speech, General Mišić noted that the Military Museum is an institution of national interest, where cultural heritage becomes a public good in which we recognise our own identity.
- By celebrating Military Museum Day, we highlight the importance of military heritage as an indispensable part of the cultural and historical development of our national identity, which, thanks to conservation and restoration, is preserved and presented to the public in the most proper manner – General Mišić said, expressing his delight that, for the first time through this exhibition, gallery visitors will have the opportunity to learn about conservators’ work, their expertise, dedication, and their mission to protect cultural heritage.Military Museum Director Major Mile Miković emphasised that Serbia has a rich cultural and historical heritage and that, since its establishment, the Military Museum has successfully preserved testimonies of the creation of the modern Serbian state and its army.
- Divided into eleven thematic sections, the exhibition showcases items whose storing and preservation present a challenge, due to their manufacturing techniques and technologies. For conservators to be dedicated to their calling, there is no single historical period of greater importance. The specificity lies in the material an item is made of, and conservators devote themselves to each item with equal and genuine care – said Major Miković.The official opening of the exhibition was attended by the Head of the Training and Doctrine Department (J-7) of the General Staff, Brigadier General Siniša Stašević, members of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, representatives of cultural institutions and members of the public.
Some of the items presented at the exhibition are: a Gladius sword, the Albanian Commemorative Medal, a general’s helmet from Prince Miloš Obrenović’s period, the sculpture titled “Kojekude Karađorđe”, numerous weapons, items made of leather, metal, and fabric, as well as special hand-carved frames.
The exhibition is open to visitors until October 21, 2026.
