Ministers of Defence of Serbia, Azerbaijan hold meeting

Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić met today in Belgrade with Colonel General Zakir Hasanov, Minister of Defence of the Republic of Azerbaijan, to discuss the further development of defence cooperation.
At the beginning of the meeting, Minister Gašić welcomed the opportunity to meet with Minister Hasanov and expressed his confidence that today’s talks would contribute to the further development of defence cooperation, as well as to the overall relations between the two countries. He noted that excellent and friendly relations maintained at the highest state level provide added impetus to the further development of cooperation.

In addition to defence cooperation, the meeting also focused on the security situation in the region and around the world. Minister Gašić emphasized that the prolonged violation of the fundamental principles of the international legal order and interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states have led to an increase in the number of emerging conflicts, hybrid wars, as well as to a more rapid escalation of regional conflicts and global tensions.
Minister Gašić stated that the defence policy of the Republic of Serbia is grounded in respect for international law, the United Nations Charter and all relevant UN Security Council resolutions, the preservation of military neutrality, the strengthening of national defence capabilities, and Serbia’s commitment to European Union membership.

The Minister of Defence noted that Serbia highly values Azerbaijan’s consistent stance against the recognition of the so-called “Kosovo”, and expressed concern over developments in the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija that are not in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244.
The Minister of Defence of Azerbaijan thanked Minister Gašić for the warm welcome and the opportunity to discuss avenues for further strengthening defence cooperation. He noted that Azerbaijan highly values its friendly relations with Serbia and expressed his confidence that today’s meeting would contribute to the further development of partnership between the two countries.
