Minister Gašić Meets with United States Congress Delegation

Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić met today with a delegation of the United States Congress led by Congressman Michael Turner.

On this occasion, the Minister underlined that the two countries are connected by decades-long diplomatic relations and stressed that the Republic of Serbia is committed to launching a comprehensive strategic dialogue with the United States. He added that bilateral military cooperation has been continuously advancing and that establishing ties at the strategic level with the United States would further strengthen mutual trust and cooperation through numerous bilateral meetings, visits and joint projects.

He noted that military-to-military cooperation is substantive and primarily focused on achieving interoperability and enhancing the operational and functional capabilities of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, highlighting the importance of joint exercises between the two countries’ armed forces.

The Minister said that cooperation in the field of defence with the United States will continue to be enhanced to the benefit of both sides, and that cooperation between the Serbian Armed Forces and the U.S. Armed Forces contributes to regional stability and to global peace, as demonstrated by the participation of Serbian and U.S. peacekeeping forces in the multinational mission in Sinai, as well as the presence of Serbian peacekeepers in numerous United Nations and European Union missions.

Minister Gašić placed particular emphasis on cooperation within the State Partnership Program, which the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces have been developing with the Ohio National Guard for nearly two decades and which represents one of the key pillars of successful bilateral military cooperation.

Congressman Turner thanked the Minister for the opportunity to hold a constructive discussion and for the possibility to consider further development of cooperation in areas of strategic importance for both countries.
