First Contingent of Serbian Armed Forces in Peacekeeping Operation in Sinai

Today, a military send-off celebration was held in the Peacekeeping Operations Centre in barracks “Banjica” for the first contingent of the Serbian Armed Forces who are to be deployed to international peacekeeping operation in the Sinai Peninsula.

This is a mission led by an independent peacekeeping organisation Multinational Forces and Observers which was established in accordance with an agreement between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the State of Israel in 1981, aimed at implementing security provisions of Egypt – Israel Agreement from 1978.

In this peacekeeping operation, the Serbian Armed Forces will engage a ten-member engineering task force within US contingent, which will be the first joint engagement of our and US military in missions of building and maintaining peace in the world. The engineers of the Serbian Armed Forces will be tasked to perform engineering and infrastructure works in the mission camp in southern part of the Sinai Peninsula. They previously underwent a specialised tactical training on training and exercise areas of the Serbian Armed Forces which was adapted to mission requirements in order to be fully prepared for the execution of assigned tasks in the area of operation.

The ceremonial send-off was attended by Chief of General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces General Milan Mojsilović with his associates, State Secretary in the Ministry of Defence Nemanja Starović, Ambassador of the United States of America in Belgrade Christopher Hill, and relatives and friends of Serbian Armed Forces members deployed to this peacekeeping operation.
On this occasion, the Chief of General Staff handed over the flag of the Republic of Serbia to Commander of Engineer Unit Captain I Class Predrag Živanović, instructing them to professionally and responsibly perform all tasks assigned in the peacekeeping mission, and worthily represent the image of members of Serbian Armed Forces, and build good relations with members of foreign armed forces.
