Test of Competence of Serbian Armed Forces Units for Engagement in Peacekeeping Operations

This week, in the "South” Base and training area “Borovac”, a tactical exercises dubbed “Serbian Shield” was carried out as part of the preparations of a force protection platoon for their participation in United Nations peacekeeping operation in Lebanon.

The purpose of the exercise, conducted in conditions adapted to those in the area of operation, was to check the competence of this Training Command unit for the execution of tasks as part of United Nations peacekeeping forces.

During several-day long exercise activities, the platoon solved various tactical suppositions, while the competence and interoperability of the unit was assessed by the evaluation team of the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces. The team observed and evaluated activities in march, application of air defence protection measures, the work on permanent control check point and observation station, and procedures in case of encountering unexploded explosive ordnance or an attack against the base.

The results achieved at the exercise showed that the force protection platoon has reached the defined standards, and that it is fully ready for the engagement in the peacekeeping operation.

The Serbian Armed Forces have been deploying a force protection platoon in United Nations mission in Lebanon since 2014. The primary task of this platoon, which is incorporated into an Italian contingent, is to secure the base where United Nations forces are stationed.
