Today, with a religious service and wreath laying ceremony held at the Memorial Cross in the Park of Zemun, members of the Air Force and Air Defence commemorated the 31st anniversary of death of the crew of a transport plane AN-12, which crushed in Armenia on 12th December 1988.

Wreaths at the Memorial Cross in the Park of Zemun were also laid by a delegation of the Air Force and Air Defence led by the Commander Major General Duško Žarković, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Armenia in Serbia Predrag Tomić, families of the perished airmen, representatives of Armenian community in Serbia and members of associations which cherish aviation traditions.

A seven member crew of the plane AN-12 perished on 12th December 1988 when the plane crashed near Yerevan, transporting humanitarian assistance to the population afflicted by disastrous earthquake that had struck Armenia. On that occasion died Lieutenant Colonels Predrag Marinković and Milan Mičić, Majors Vladimir Erčić and Milenko Simić and Sergeant Majors First Class Milisav Petrović, Boriša Mosurović and Jovan Zisov.

In gratitude for the assistance rendered and in memory of the perished crew, in 1993 Armenian people presented a Khachkar – a cross-stone which is one of the most recognisable symbols of Armenian culture. The Memorial Cross placed in the Park of Zemun is a place of remembrance of deceased members of the Air Force and Air Defence.
