“Don Giovaнni” - a legendary seducer in a new robe
Last night, Stanislav Binički Artistic Ensemble of the Ministry of Defence under the conductor's baton of maestro Gregory Buchalter from the New York Metropolitan Opera, was a musical accompaniment in the premiere performance of Mozart's opera Don Giovanni at Belgrade’s Kombank Dvorana.
In the organiсation of the GIPAC (Global Intercultural Performing Arts Cast) US music association, artists from Serbia, China and the United States organised for the spectators a gala opera evening in which the character of the legendary seducer was interpreted by the leading figure of the National Theatre Opera Vladimir Andrić. Primadonna of the Belgrade Opera Jasmina Trumbetaš Petrović glamoured in the role of Donna Elvira, while the soprano Vanessa Zhang from China played Donna Anna, Dragoljub Bajić was Leporello, and the Chinese guest Zhang Zhang was given the interpretation of the character of Zerlina.
Young director Aleksandar Nikolić made sure that the famous seducer was “dressed” in a completely new robe, and this time the known Da Ponte's plot about passion and revenge, defiance and punishment, honour and humiliation, was moved to the sixties. However, it was not just about contemporary costumes and scenography, but also the characters were more lively, closer and more feasible, but also extremely distinctive, playful and passionate, which the audience easily accepted and rewarded their arias with applause.
The Stanislav Binički Artistic Ensemble of the Ministry of Defence, which performed in such a demanding genre as opera is, for the first time, successfully followed the variety of the voices, acting, costumes and scenographies. Justifying the name of the creator of the Serbian opera Binički whose name it proudly bears, they fully satisfied the organizers' confidence and responded to the challenge with exceptional professionalism that made it an integral part of the magnificent opera evening.A sort of the replaying back of the premiere will be held tonight as well in the former House of Trade Unions and now Kombank Dvorana when the composition will be only slightly changed, and Donna Elvira will be played by the Chinese primadonna Mignon Hao, while Zerlina will be plaid Yuxuan Chi. The choreography of the performed Mozart's opera Don Giovanni is signed by Aleksandar Ilić, the designer is Tanja Žiropađa and the costume designer Katarina Nikolić.
