St. Sava ball in Vienna



12th Saint Sava ball was held in the organization of the Serbian Center which cherishes the tradition of serbian ball in the austrian capital. For the first time, at the invitation of our embassy in Vienna, the Stanislav Binicki ensemble performed at the ball. Our militray musicians, with their solosits Nada Pavlovic and Oliver Njego, added to the performance of the ensemble.

The opening ceremony, after intoning the Serbian hymn “Boze pravde” started with the lighting the candle in observance of St. Sava Day and with the blessing of of the Mid European Episcope of the Serbian Orthodox Church Konstantin. Oliver Njego, the famous opera singer, performed the hymn in honor of St. Sava.

The Serbian ball was attended by numoerous diplomats accreditted in Vienna including the ambassador of serbia with the international organizations in Vienna Miroslava Beham, while Aleksandra Kojic represented the Serbian diaspora.

In the Schenbrun ball room, there was alos a large number of the representatives of austrian institutions, including the chairperson of the province parliament Erika Stubenvol, the Chairman of the Labour Chamber of Vienna Herbet Tumpel, the representativbe and an MP of the Social Democratic Party to the Vienna Parliament Anica Macka Deuder as well as Edward Shock, the head of the parliament club of the Freedom Party in the Vienna Assembly.

Also a large number of the representatives of the diplomatic military corps of Ukraine, Russia,Czechoslovakia, Germany, Bulgaria and Kazahstan attended the ball.

As is the tradition every year, the opening was marked with the tones of the Serbian squaredance performed by the pianist Elena Uprianova. The composition composed by Johan Strauss Junior at the request of Milos Obrenovic. This composition was first performed on 28 January 1846.

The singer of Vienna Opera Evgeny Dimitrev, the Austrian Dance Group “Kopecki” and a Cuban music group alos participated.

With the orchestra of Stanislav Binicki ensemble and the vocal solosit Nada Pavlovic, several hundred guests of the St. Sava ball continued to enjoy the dance and songs and great ballrom atmosphere.

This ball continues the tradition established 12 years ago by the Serbian Center from Vienna. The first records of the celebration of St. Sava Day in Vienna date back to 1734 which are kept in the National Library in Vienna.
