Expert meeting on the occasion of 30 years of work of psychologists army units

In organization of the Department for development of psychological activities in the House of Guards in Topcider, the symposium "Thirty years of work of psychologists in the units of the Armed Forces" was held today, with participation of psychologists from the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces.

The meeting was attended by State Secretary at the Ministry of Defence Nenad Neric, Acting Assistant Minister for Human Resources Milos Jankovic, and Head of Department for Personnel Brigadier General Dragoslav Lackovic, as well as Head of the Department for the development of psychological activities of the Department of Human Resources of the Ministry of Defence Nada Markovic, with associates.

Opening today's gathering, State Secretary Neric pointed out that it is considered that psychology has always been among the people because of their need to interpret themselves, their own experiences and other people, and so it should not be surprising that the psychological science soon found its application in the army as well.

- Today, all modern armies of the world have their own counselling service, which is completely understandable, because, regardless of the rapid development of increasingly complex military techniques, man has remained the most important factor of the outcome of early actions - State Secretary Neric said, recalling that the psychology has appeared in the military in this region in 1919, as a teaching subject at the former Military Academy, but that it provided an essentially practical contribution in the selection of pilots.

The occasion of the meeting, according to him, is a major milestone of three decades of psychological work in the units, whose first step was
the formation of psychological service in the troop, in the departments for applied psychology and hygienic-epidemiological squads.

- In 1985, the first psychologist was admitted to the Guard, and in 1988 began the mass admission of psychologists in the units of the former army. Today, of the 89 psychologists working in the defence system, 49 work in units and commands, and some of them have more than a thousand persons in the area of responsibility - Secretary of State Neric stressed.

Today, a military psychologist, he added, as an important team member of each commander, an essential adviser and important support when you need to assess the engagement of personnel in all work and war circumstances.

- Among you today are also psychologists, civilians, who have participated on an equal footing with the officers in combat, who were ready for the ultimate sacrifice for their homeland - Secretary of State Neric said, indicating that the requirements that are posed to psychologists and the Department for development of psychological activities are great and challenging.

As Nada Markovic noted, today's gathering is an opportunity to pay tribute to all the psychologists that have given, and still give a valuable human and professional contribution while working in the units of our Armed Forces.

The further course of the gathering was marked by lectures on the beginnings and experiences in the work of military psychologists in these areas, and on research in military psychology.
