Marking the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vranjevac

To mark the one hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Vranjevac, today, on the hill in the Municipality of Malo Crnice, a monument to the killed soldiers and civilians from Branicevo district in the liberation wars of Serbia from 1912 to 1918 was unveiled.

Wreaths were laid at the monument by Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic, Vice President of the National Assembly Veroljub Arsic, Chief of General Staff General Ljubisa Dikovic with the delegation, numerous delegations and citizens.

Stating that more than 100 years has passed since the beginning of the First World War, President Nikolic said that the entire war was a Golgotha of the Serbian people.

President said that, in the First World War, Serbia lost a third of the population and that it was an epic struggle for freedom, peace and independence where the Serbian rivers and the soil were immersed with the blood of our ancestors.

He said that, unfortunately, more than a hundred years have passed and those who defended Serbia from incursions across the Danube did not have a decent place where their descendants could come, light a candle and, remembering their feats, get the strength to continue fighting for freedom, peace and independence.

- Today, we have paid our debt to them, because, finally, on the hill above the monastery Vranjevac above Bradaca monastery, we have unveiled a monument to the Serbian soldiers and civilians killed in the liberation wars 1912-1918 - President Nikolic said.

- Serbian heroes and victims of the First World War in this region now have a monument, when we do not know where their graves. The monument worthy of their sacrifice for the faith and fatherland was built on the site where the miracle of nature remained preserved trenches in which they gave their lives for Serbia, President Nikolic said.

He said that, from this place, we are reminding future generations not to forget their own history, and to foster the love and respect for their heroic ancestors.

The monument was erected in honour of more than 23,000 officers, soldiers and civilians from Branicevo district who were killed in the liberation wars of Serbia from 1912 to 1918.
