A street in Pozega named after Lieutenant Borko Nikitovic

As of today, one of the streets in Pozega bears the name of brave lieutenant Borko Nikitovic, who on this day 24 years ago laid down his life on the bumper of the fatherland. The street that will now bear the name of the young hero was opened by Chief of General Staff General Ljubisa Dikovic and Mayor of Pozega Milovan Micovic.

Chief of General Staff, accompanied by Commander of the Second Army Brigade, Brigadier General Dragoslav Sladakovic and Deputy Commander of the Guard Colonel Zeljko Gavrilovic, laid a wreath in front of the memorial at the school in the Uzici village, where the young Guard lieutenant finished the first four grades of elementary school. Besides them, wreaths were laid by members of veteran organizations and numerous relatives.

On this occasion, Colonel Gavrilovic, Borko’s “schoolmate” at the Academy, pointed out that the life brought Borko Nikitovic, as the best pupil and later as a student, to the most elite part of the army, the Guards Brigade, and then to the Slavonian battlefield.

- On this day in 1991, he went on his last assignment and on that assignment for his country, he gave the most precious thing, his life, and he gave us the task to continue defending our country and our people and to be faithful to his oath - Deputy Commander of the Guard said thanking the Municipality of Pozega for supporting the initiative of the Guard for one of the streets of the hometown of the never forgotten hero to bear his name. He thanked the family which, despite its loss, has not turned its back on the military, and continued participating in the education of young Serbian officers through the fund named after Lieutenant Nikitovic.

Borko's mother Zora Nikitovic thanked the Armed Forces for preserving the memory of not only her son, but of all Serbian children who lost their lives in the fight for the fatherland and freedom.

In order to preserve the memory of the brave lieutenant, in 1993, the Serbian Orthodox Church, the Serbian Armed Forces and the University of Belgrade established a charitable fund, which is financed by founders and other donors, among which Borko’s mother is most prominent. The fund rewards pupils and students of the schools through in which Borko spent his life. That way, the fund prizes the best pupils of "Petar Lekovic" elementary school in Pozega and students of the Military High School, and the best students of the Military Academy of Belgrade University and the Faculty of Theology.

Borko Nikitovic was born on 9 July 1968 in Pozega. After eight years of schooling in his hometown, he entered the Military High School and then the Military Academy, which he finished in the war year of 1991 as the first in the ranking, with an average score of 10, and his military career began in the Guards Brigade.

Lieutenant Borko Nikitovic lost his life in Vukovar, on 16 October 1991, in his 23rd year of life, sacrificing himself to save his soldiers. For selfless sacrifice and courage manifested, he was posthumously awarded the medal for bravery.
